This month holds many memories for me. I’ve lost special people in my life, and for a long time, I ran from that pain instead of meeting it. This year, I’m learning what it means to start grieving without guilt instead of running from it.
I’ve dreaded this month for a long time.
This year, I’m choosing something different. I’m choosing to face it.
Why I’m Confronting This Now
I started the healing category on this blog for a reason: to help anyone going through pain feel heard, and to remind them they’re not alone.
But healing isn’t just something I write about. It’s something I have to keep practising.
This month, that means finally sitting with a grief I’ve spent a long time avoiding.
So I’m meeting August differently this year. Not with dread. With a willingness to face what I’ve been running from.
Grieving Without Guilt Starts With Permission
If you’ve lost someone you love, this month — this post — is for you.
Your pain is valid.
You can mourn without feeling guilty about it. No reason needs to sound big enough. No timeline needs to make sense to anyone else.
Grief doesn’t ask permission. Neither should your right to feel it. Grieving without guilt starts the moment you stop needing to explain yourself.
You Don’t Have to Wear the Mask of “The Strong One”
So many of us learn to carry loss quietly.
We hold it together for everyone else. We answer “I’m fine” so people stop worrying. Somewhere along the way, we learned that falling apart wasn’t okay — so we wear the mask of the strong one instead. But you can take your time.
You can feel the emotion instead of performing strength you don’t have. Grief isn’t something to manage gracefully in front of an audience.
It’s something to feel in whatever shape it takes.
You’re Not Alone in This
If this month brings up memories of someone you’ve lost, I want you to know something:
You’re not the only one carrying this.
So many of us are quietly grieving someone, even while life expects us to keep moving forward.
Wherever you are in your grief — fresh, or years old and still catching you off guard some mornings — there’s no wrong way to carry it. There’s no deadline for outgrowing it.
A few gentle reminders, this month and always:
- Your grief doesn’t need to make sense to anyone but you.
- You can mourn without guilt, and without explaining why.
This month, I’m choosing to face my own pain instead of running from it. If you’re ready to do the same, in your own time, in your own way, I hope this space feels like a place you can do that without judgment.
(If you’re also in a season of starting over, you might relate to Starting Again (When Life Got in the Way), where I wrote about a different kind of restart.)
Grieve for as long as you need to. Take your time.
And you are not alone.
With love,
Cheta Otiji
